the best offroad weekend in Wales
If you're looking for one of the best off-road weekends in the UK, the Strata Florida area in Mid Wales offers everything from legendary river crossings and rocky mountain tracks to remote reservoirs and some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain. This route combines the most iconic legal green lanes in the Cambrian Mountains while keeping road mileage to a minimum.
Start: Strata Florida Abbey
The adventure begins at the historic Strata Florida Abbey before heading onto the famous Strata Florida Trail. Widely regarded as one of the UK's greatest legal green lanes, the route features multiple river crossings, rocky sections, steep climbs and stunning mountain scenery.
Difficulty: 4/5
Trail Time: 1.5–3 hours depending on convoy size and conditions.
Road Distance: Approximately 12 miles
Driving Time: 20–25 minutes
After exiting Strata Florida near Abergwesyn, continue towards the Claerwen area.
Lower Claerwen is one of the hidden gems of Mid Wales. The trail combines rough stone surfaces, water run-offs and open mountain views with far less traffic than Strata Florida.

The Claerwen Dam area offers some of the most dramatic scenery in Wales. While not the most technical route, it is arguably one of the most scenic.

Continue through the Elan Valley road network, taking in:
The roads are smooth, flowing and surrounded by some of the most remote landscapes in Wales.
Finish the day at Claerwen Dam. As the light drops over the reservoir, the scenery becomes truly unforgettable.
The Monks Trod is one of Wales' most famous historic byways. Access regulations can change, so always check current legal status before travelling.

Even if vehicle access is restricted, the surrounding roads and viewpoints make the area well worth visiting.

Before you go, check current TROs (Traffic Regulation Orders) and route status, as Lake District lanes can close temporarily. Stay on legal BOATs/UCRs only.
Start around Coniston and work east-to-west through the easier scenic lanes before tackling anything technical.

1. Breasthigh Road
The Lake District National Park describes it as climbing to around 430m with loose stone, bedrock and steep gradients.
Land Rover groups regularly rank it among the best and most challenging lanes in the Lakes.
