The Outland Project: Offroad Guide

the best offroad weekend in Wales

The Ultimate Strata Florida Green Lane Adventure

If you're looking for one of the best off-road weekends in the UK, the Strata Florida area in Mid Wales offers everything from legendary river crossings and rocky mountain tracks to remote reservoirs and some of the most spectacular scenery in Britain. This route combines the most iconic legal green lanes in the Cambrian Mountains while keeping road mileage to a minimum.

Route Overview

Day 1 – Strata Florida & Lower Claerwen

Start: Strata Florida Abbey

The adventure begins at the historic Strata Florida Abbey before heading onto the famous Strata Florida Trail. Widely regarded as one of the UK's greatest legal green lanes, the route features multiple river crossings, rocky sections, steep climbs and stunning mountain scenery.

Difficulty: 4/5

Trail Time: 1.5–3 hours depending on convoy size and conditions.

Transfer to Lower Claerwen

Road Distance: Approximately 12 miles

Driving Time: 20–25 minutes

After exiting Strata Florida near Abergwesyn, continue towards the Claerwen area.

Lower Claerwen Route

Lower Claerwen is one of the hidden gems of Mid Wales. The trail combines rough stone surfaces, water run-offs and open mountain views with far less traffic than Strata Florida.

Difficulty: 3/5

Highlights:

  • Remote mountain scenery
  • Fast flowing rocky tracks
  • Reservoir views
  • Excellent convoy photo opportunities

Overnight Camp

Recommended base camp:

  • Elan Oaks Camping
  • Wyeside Camping & Caravan Park

Both provide excellent access to the next day's routes.

Day 2 – Claerwen Dam & Elan Valley

Claerwen Dam Reservoir Lane

Distance from Lower Claerwen: Approximately 5 miles

Driving Time: 10 minutes

The Claerwen Dam area offers some of the most dramatic scenery in Wales. While not the most technical route, it is arguably one of the most scenic.

Difficulty: 2–3/5

Highlights:

  • Claerwen Dam
  • Reservoir-edge driving
  • Mountain roads
  • Spectacular sunrise and sunset photography

This is the perfect location for convoy photos and drone footage.

Elan Valley Scenic Loop

Continue through the Elan Valley road network, taking in:

  • Craig Goch Reservoir
  • Pen y Garreg Reservoir
  • Garreg Ddu Reservoir
  • Caban Coch Reservoir

The roads are smooth, flowing and surrounded by some of the most remote landscapes in Wales.

Sunset Recommendation

Finish the day at Claerwen Dam. As the light drops over the reservoir, the scenery becomes truly unforgettable.

Day 3 – Monks Trod & Cambrian Mountains

Monks Trod Area

The Monks Trod is one of Wales' most famous historic byways. Access regulations can change, so always check current legal status before travelling.

Difficulty: 4/5

Highlights:

  • Ancient trading route
  • High moorland crossings
  • Remote mountain landscapes
  • Historic significance

Even if vehicle access is restricted, the surrounding roads and viewpoints make the area well worth visiting.

Abergwesyn Mountain Roads

Finish the trip by exploring the mountain roads around Abergwesyn.

These roads feature:

  • Remote valleys
  • Waterfalls
  • Forest sections
  • Some of the most isolated scenery in Wales

  • Avoid Strata Florida after prolonged heavy rain due to river depth.
  • Carry recovery equipment and communication devices.
  • Travel with at least two vehicles where possible.
  • Respect local communities and livestock.

The Perfect Mid Wales Off-Road Weekend

For the ultimate experience, tackle Strata Florida on Day 1, explore Lower Claerwen in the afternoon, spend Day 2 around Claerwen Dam and the Elan Valley reservoirs, then finish with the Monks Trod area and the mountain roads around Abergwesyn. Lake District 3-Day Green Lane & Camping Itinerary

Before you go, check current TROs (Traffic Regulation Orders) and route status, as Lake District lanes can close temporarily. Stay on legal BOATs/UCRs only.

Day 1 – Southern Lakes Warm-Up

Start around Coniston and work east-to-west through the easier scenic lanes before tackling anything technical.

1. Grizedale Fox (Grizedale–Esthwaite Lane)

  • Difficulty: 2/5
  • Surface: Forest track, loose stone, some washouts.
  • Highlights: Dense woodland, lake views, easy convoy driving.
  • Great first lane to get everyone settled in.

Drive to next lane: ~35 mins

2. Arnside Intake

  • Difficulty: 3/5
  • Surface: Rocky sections, tight turns, some ruts.
  • Technical enough to be interesting without being vehicle-breaking.
  • Better driven west → east.

Drive to camp: ~20 mins

Camp Recommendation

I'd camp at:

Park Foot Holiday Park

or, if you're after something more wild-feeling:

Low Wray Campsite

Both put you in a good position for Day 2.

Day 2 – The Northern Classics

1. Old Coach Road

  • Difficulty: 2.5/5
  • Length: ~5.2 miles
  • One of the most famous legal lanes in the UK.
  • Huge Helvellyn and Blencathra views.
  • Ideal convoy lane with plenty of opportunities for photos.

A Reddit user recently described it as their "new favourite green lane" after driving it in a Defender.

Drive to lunch stop (Keswick): ~20 mins

Lunch/fuel in:

Keswick

Afternoon
Explore the surrounding legal lanes around St John's in the Vale and Matterdale if open.

Drive to camp: ~40 mins

Return to the same campsite for a second night.

Day 3 – The Challenge Day

1. Breasthigh Road

  • Difficulty: 4/5
  • Length: ~2.7 miles
  • Probably the most technical lane on this itinerary.
  • Rocky climbs, steep descents, off-camber sections and exposed terrain.
  • Best saved until everyone has had two days to get comfortable.

The Lake District National Park describes it as climbing to around 430m with loose stone, bedrock and steep gradients.

Land Rover groups regularly rank it among the best and most challenging lanes in the Lakes.

Drive to Tebay: ~15 mins

Finish at:

Tebay Services

for food and convoy debrief before heading home.
